My wife and I are considering purchasing our first home here in Houston, our budget is around $300K. Proximity to Downtown, good schools and investment value are all important factors. Please share your opinion on the best neighborhoods to search. Thanks!

River Oaks. If you can find a house for $300K in River Oaks, that's the one you should buy.

Thanks everyone, Katy is too far from everything, 77007 is an option but i'm not sure about its investment value - all land lots are pretty small; how about garden oaks?

Willowbend or Westbury are the 2 best bang for you buck under 300k on the southwest side close to the loop you might even be able to get a remodeled home

Talk to a real estate agent. Garden Oaks may have decent elementary schools, but awful middle and high schools. Parts of Westbury/Willowbend may be good, but schools may be an issue in other parts. 77007 is a townhouse/bungalow area so unless you like living in one, there aren't going to be many other options. So I repeat...talk to a real estate agent.

If you have specific questions about living in some of these areas, people here can help answer questions, but to ask "what's best" you'll get 30 different answers based on everyone's own experience.

My Wife and I had a similar criteria list back in March and ended up buying a house in Eastwood. Here is my thread asking for input:

//www.city-data.com/forum/houst...ts-wanted.html

Here is an example of what you can get for $250k:

4425 McKinney, Houston, TX 77023 - HAR.com

You might also look in Riverside Terrace which has very nice large homes but is closer to the med center than downtown.

If you have any questions feel free to send me a message.
