If you're looking for good barbecue, the key is to get out of the city. Several places with a 45 minute drive of Sugar Land have won all kinds of accolades and are outstanding.

In East Bernard there is Vincek's, in Eagle Lake there is Austin's, in Wharton there is Hinze's, in Columbus there is Mikeska's. All of these places are legendary and are worth the drive. Any of them will put Luther's, and all of the other BBQ chains to shame.

Mmmm, thanks for the post. When fall and winter roll around it becomes motorcycle riding season for me and a couple of my friends. We love to go on rides to eat good BBQ. I'll add a few of these to the list for this fall.

Has anyone tried the BBQ place on 90A, just west of Ulrich across from the NALCO plant?

I checked out Central Texas BBQ in Pearland last night as it was close (enough) to where I was staying. It was really good and I would not hesitate to go back! I also liked that they had a plate that had smaller portions. I still had leftovers though!

Well, my Daddy made the best BBQ in our own backyard........so maybe the restaurants are lacking because the backyard chefs are / were THE BEST. I mean...who went to a BBQ restaurant in Houston back in the '60s, '70s, etc.?!

If you're in Humble/Kingwood/Atascocita, I think Tin Roof BBQ is the best in that area. Huge outdoor covered patio, although there is a smaller area inside where you can sit if you want air conditioning. I like it because not only is the food tasty, but they also have a nice playground. The kiddies can run around and wear themselves out while you sit in the shade, drinking iced tea. Some nights they even have a band playing, and every now and then I've seen a cotton candy vendor.

First of all Rudy's and Papa's are pretty commercial joints, Mainstream BBQ spots are like tourist traps the people in the know really don't go there. I would say Goode's has some great BBQ and it's a place in the northside that has east texas style BBQ. It's right off 45 N. Forget the name but had it twice and reminded me of home. I've had the Rudy's in Austin and Waco and the Rudy's off 290 in Houston beat's it in my book. When I went to Austin I wasn't that big of a fan of the BBQ. Still hadn't tried the places in Hill Country. But from what i've tasted in different parts of Texas I don't see anybody having better BBQ then in East Texas. Bodacious and Carter's best BBQ I've ever had. All in the Longview/Marshall/Tyler region
