What is the gang situation like in Houston? Specifically, where are the bad neighborhoods?

Houston isn't on that gang nonsense like other major cities. We just have cliques of guys that represent their neighborhood, block, side of town, etc. Inner Northside from Cavalcade to Gulf Bank and most of Greenspoint (specifically Ella Rd.) is no-man's land. Inner NW Houston-Antoine/Acres Homes area, 290 from Hollister to Tidwell is rough; Inner NE Houston-5th Ward, used to be called Bloody Nickel due to its violent past, now violent crime rarely happens in 5th Ward. Southside/SE and SW Houston-South Park, South Acres/Crestmont Park, Cloverland, Sunnyside are the rougher hoods in Southside/SE Houston. SW Houston-Gulfton, Sharpstown, basically the 59 corridor around Belfort/Bissonet.

That's the rundown of Houston's danger zones.

As a native Houstonian and Realtor, I grew up in these areas. The suburban N/NW Houston have the least crime rates.

AcresHomes 44 is spot-on accurate with the description of minority denominated communities, in relation to blacks. Blacks in Houston minority communities are more likely to form cliques, instead of gangs. That's not to say some of cliques are not bad groups of kids; but usually it like any other clique popularity, jocks, brains, etc...

When I was in school, gangs were more likely to be found in the minority communities where Hispanics dominated. Those areas with the exceptions of Greenspoint, were usually the areas below the beltway, east of 45 Northeast/East/S/SE Houston. Unfortunately, Houston is so large and has so many schools. There is no way to give specific schools or communities.

I belong to a motorcycle gang rife with bankers, lawyers and other professionals. Don't run us off the road.

Just sayin'...

there are a lot of gangs here as there are in EVERY single major US city. every single one of them. unless you plan on joining your selected set - you very very likely will never have any experience with them (neither will your kids). but dont be one of those parents who teach their kids "well if someone bothers you just punch them in the face!"

my run in with corner dealers and gang members have all been surprisingly pleasant. not that i am supportive of that type of group think

^Exactly. I went to one of the perceived "roughest" high schools in Houston and never had a problem because I never got involved with them, I bought my weed from the white kids at Bellaire because they had the best quality. The gang members in the school were wana be posers because the majority of the real gang members didn't make it pass 9th grade.
