My husband and I are considering moving to the Houston area. My question is where is a good area for us retirees - not too quiet. We are active?

Conroe, about 40-45 miles north of Houston, would be an ideal place for retirement. There are some really nice property by the lake, Lake Conroe. The City of Conroe, Texas.

It's quiet but not too quiet. It's not too far off from The Woodlands and Houston. If hurricanes hit, you wouldn't need to worry much about leaving the home and evacuate elsewhere.

Pointless speculation without a housing budget.

Heard College station was a good spot. Close enough to major medical but with local amenities to stay entertained.

I lived in College Station for a few years, not sure what "local amenities" you are referring to unless an HEB and a bunch of college bars count as amenities.

Lake Conroe and Clear Lake come to mind. Clear lake by the water has the hurricane storm surge risk though.

They have all the national chains & big box stores now. Unlike when I was there in the late 90s.

Wow, Houston would be a horrible place to retire, in my opinion. Why not pick some nice quiet place, near or out in the countryside? Maybe a place with a nice view of trees or lakes or something, away from the traffic, pollution, noise, etc.? You could still be active, but it would be a better quality of active.

Yeah I am in this same boat. While I am glad for the opportunities this area presents, I would not want to voluntarily retire here. I would be thinking more along the lines of the Hill Country.
