Would it be crazy to live in Houston without a car? I was just curious because I am living in Seattle right now without the use of my car because of a DUI that I got. Being that I live in Downtown Seattle I have actually been able to manage quite well without my car and I don't miss it that much. So I guess I was just curious what my situation would be like had I been living in Houston. Atlanta seems ok for this situation but I wonder about Houston.

It isn't feasable. But yes you could, I wouldn't in this heat now though.

I live downtown and pretty much only use my car for work and going shopping. Other than that I am using a taxi or Rev Shuttle to go to Midtown or Washington to meet friends. I walk everywhere else, to all the concert venue's that are downtown and also my gym, which is downtown.

If you are going to do it. Your best bet would be to live in downtown, midtown or montrose/midtown area. The PT in this city is a joke. It would take you an hour to get to the Galleria area, and with a car you can be there within 10-15 minutes.

I do have friends that don't own a car, they grewup here, but moved to DC and didn't need a car. When they moved back they had no need for it. Still living here they haven't gotten another car (they can afford one, they just don't want one). They take a cab to Costco once a month to get items, and take cabs everywhere else they need to go. Or have friends pick them up when they are going out. (I don't mind picking them up because they live 5 blocks from me).

I can't imagine living without a car in Houston. That would be complete misery and hopelessness.

I just sold my only vehicle a couple of days ago and am without a car for at least a couple more days. I can get around fine without a car... i live in the heights and work in garden oaks and the heights bike trail does an awesome job of getting me to work in about 15 minutes...and i pass by a big fiesta grocery store so i can get food on the way home.

The Heights is a very bike friendly area so getting around by bike is very easy... but this is not the situation for many other areas of town.

You should be able to manage in some areas.

Depends on where you live and work, but wouldn't recommend it. Houston is not Seattle nor is it anywhere near as no car friendly as most of the cities in the northern part of the country. I think it would be particularly difficult if you are thinking about living in the Woodlands (which I have seen you post elsewhere).

Plenty of people make it work.

I used to make it work. It's more convenient to have your own vehicle but you can try to plan your life around not having or using a vehicle.

I say this as someone that LOVES owning a car. I would, however, dig being able to bike or walk to work.

You could do it if you live close to where you work, but you have to think about all the other stuff: entertainment options, shopping for groceries, running certain errands. Then, don't know if this applies to you, there's dating. That's really going to limit you. In San Diego, I dated a guy who didn't have a car........which meant I drove everywhere.........which meant he was history in no time.
