Hello there. It looks like my husband is going to be relocated from New Orleans to Freeport, TX within the next few months and I'm panicked about finding the best neighborhood to suit our family's needs. We have a 4 yr old daughter and an 8 yr old son with Aspergers (high functioning autism) and we need an area with a caring school system.

We've narrowed down house hunting search to Pearland and Friendswood, but aren't sure which area would be a better fit? Both seem nice, though I've read conflicting info about Pearland schools not having the best special ed department and the Friendswood area seems to lack diversity. He currently attends a fantastic elementary school with lots of support, though this will be his last year with an IEP. Any suggestions?

Also, we've found homes we really like along the Pearland Pwy, Shadow Creek and West Ranch. One home in particular, but the school attached to the property is Cockrell. Any info on that particular school? I see the school rating is 7 out of 10 and was just curious if anyone had any recent, first-hand knowledge to share?

Thanks for any info you guys can give!!!!

Hi, you must be looking at a house close to ours as our son attended Cockrell when we first moved to Pearland from the UK. He was very nervous about attending a new school in a new country but the teachers all made him feel very welcome and he settled in very quickly. I was very pleased with the school and teachers and also at Sablatura M.S. He is off to his first day of 7th grade today at Pearland Junior High West. I don't have first hand experience of the special ed department at Pearland ISD so can't help you there, sorry.

Good luck with your move.

Thank you for the feedback! I'm pretty nervous about any move since we've been in the New Orleans area for the last 11 yrs and really enjoy it. We did have a chance years ago to relocate to King's Lynn, England but that fell though at the last minute.

I'm happy to hear you guys liked Cockrell after transferring. There is a beautiful home located on a lake I found in our price range, I just wasn't sure about the elementary school. I think my son would do well in a smaller school with a friendly atmosphere over some of the larger schools in Friendswood, though I keep hearing that those schools are wonderful. I just don't want him to get too overwhelmed.

Thanks again for your post! All info is valued and might help me find sleep again...

Your dh would have an hour commute from any of those areas to Freeport, I think. Have you thought about Lake Jackson or Angleton. Angleton is about 1/2 hour commute. Lake Jackson is even less. My son and dil lived in Lake Jackson and liked it quite a lot. They did not have kids at the time though, so we don't know anything about the schools there. The schools appear to be rated well.
