I think that here in Texas those crossing are not very popular, because we do not have many people walking. Downtown corner intersections are marked only with white lines and traffic signals ( walk/don't walk). But they are common in San Francisco, New York and cities where people indeed walk a lot.

Wide, multilanes roadways have sometimes a "Median Refuge Islands" that allow pedestrians to cross the first half of the roadway and then to wait before crossing the second half of the roadway.

Obviously, many years ago there were a lot of people walking in Houston
