My family lives in Sugar Land but attends a church 24 miles away. We love our church but the commute is not good, especially because we want to be involved more than just once a week on Sundays.

I know I can't find the same type of church near Sugar Land because gorgeous Gothic cathedrals aren't built in the suburbs, but I would like to know what people who attend church near Sugar Land love about their churches. Does anyone attend a suburban church with particularly inspiring sermons? Great religious education for children? Really friendly people? Something else that is wonderful?

Big bonus points for adult education in progressive Christian theology (like "Living the Questions"), inclusiveness, service to the community, children's programming that is really engaging, and any hint of traditional architecture and/or stained glass.

(I am NOT interested in debating religion...I just want to hear personal recommendations for specific churches in Sugar Land. Missouri City, Richmond, Rosenberg, or Stafford). If I am going to keep commuting 24 miles each way, I want to make sure I really explored alternatives first.

We really like Sugar Creek Baptist... the pastor is awesome, huge youth support and program, very community-involved, diverse, and plenty going on outside of Sundays. It is pretty strict Bible though as far as sermons, so if you're looking for something really progressive or unusual that won't be it.

Thanks, AK123!

Anyone else? Either most people here don't attend church, or are shy sharing why you like the one you attend.

I've always liked St. Theresa's 7th @ Burney. Nice folks, good area.

is there a particular denomination you prefer or are you open to all of them?

Since I am doing early stage broad research, I am open about denomination. Before I moved to Sugar Land, I attended Episcopal churches. In Houston, I've been attending a United Methodist church.

I'm going to have to look back but it seems like there was a church thread several months ago asking about churches in the same area.

It might have been me asking before, too. I didn't get many answers then and I gave up and starting commuting to Houston. This time, I'm doing more research. I think I've found some options to explore.

From what you said, I think you would like the "First Colony Church of Christ" (somewhat big church)

I really liked it, but we are moving to North Houston.
This is what I liked.... I like a "no non-sense" church, and what I mean with that is if a church claims to be christian (follow the teachings of Jesus)
Guess what.... ANYTHING you tell me, better be in accordance to the teachings of Jesus.

The first few weeks we went, the pastor talked about what is usually controversial issues.
One day he talked about "how should we vote", another day about "what does the bible say about homosexuality".
I was very impressed... he tackled them the way is supposed to be ... "Let's see what Jesus said about it, period".
I didn't like some of the things he said.... but hey, most of them was quoting Jesus.

Is that the big red brick one with tall steeple on First Colony Blvd, near the shopping center with the Lowes?

Another to suggest is Williams Trace Church... at least that used to be its name before it changed (to something that escapes me now) since it was confusing not actually being on Williams Trace Blvd (I think it's on Hwy 59.) I have a few friends who really like that one.
