I have narrowed it down to the apartments below. I can't visit before I move so I need someone who lives there to tell me what to do. I want to live near the beach and have amenities (grocery store, etc.) with in walking distance.

Newport fills both but the beach looks like just giant boulders. Which is best for neighbor hood, beaches and anything else you can think of telling me about living in Galveston with what I am looking for. Thank you for answering.

1. Newport at West Beach (3222 69th Street Galveston, TX 77551)
2. The Park at Cedar Lawn Apartments (4400 Avenue N Galveston, TX 77550)

From one Daniel to another, you really need to visit beforehand. I don't know the streets very well, but I live about 25 miles from Galveston. Just went to eat dinner there last weekend. Not trying to scare you, but while there are some really cool things there, there are also some really sketchy areas spread out there. Consider the walk ability and amenities AFTER you have evaluated safety.

There is plenty of sand, but yeah there are huge chunks of concrete jutting out into the ocean (jetties) that you can walk on and fish. I think it is meant to protect from erosion.

Thank you for replying. Visiting first is sound advice but with my schedule it does not look possible. Hopefully someone who is familiar with the streets can be my eyes and adviser. I was curios what the deal was with all those jetties so I'm glad you brought that up.

Lived there along time ago 45th @ Avenue S 1/2. Crockett Street.. Thought about moving back before the last storm. Having lost a house and lot to a storm I'm a little spooked. Mom lived in Cedar Lawn Circle. It will always be a good neighborhood. The closer you get to the beach and the tourist the more iffy it gets. One of my neighbors in Champions (Houston) worked in Texas City. He rented an apartment
by those Victorians on the beach for 3 years. He came home on the weekends. Never had a problem.

Default Galveston locals please advice me

Thank you Texas7 and Crone for replying. The information you provided was helpful but what I am really looking for is advice on the specific areas I mentioned.

I really like the Park at Cedar Lawn apartments but get a feeling the neighborhood is bad.

I also like the location of the Newport apartments but pictures I've seen indicate the beach in the immediate area is only giant rocks.

If any Galveston locals can please advice me I would sincerely appreciate it.

I checked those out and yes they are nice apartments but too far West for me. I want to be walking distance of most amenities.

Those giant boulders you see are either jetties or up against the seawall to protect from erosion. The Galveston beach in town in contingent on the tide in some spots.
Do you have a car? Call the city manager's office. I think he just got run off. Talk to the clerk. Call the police department. Ask if there is any trouble in those places. I cannot speak about the current situation in Galveston since the storm, but when my momma lived there and when I lived there, there was really no bad part of town. There are 2 factions in Galveston. George Mitchell and Tillman Fertitta. There will be no crime around their holdings. That convention center was the place the city held out during the storm. As I recall the city behind the seawall could only afford 1 high school, therefore no Bad neighborhoods. Some were more expensive than others. In the real olden days, after WW 11, it was Cedar Lawn Circle.
You will discover there are places for locals, and places for tourist. They don't much mix, except for business.

Of those two Newport at West Beach (3222 69th Street Galveston, TX 77551) is the best location for grocery stores (Walmart Supercenter, Randalls & Kroger withing walking distance), shopping and several restaurants near by. The area looks like a good residential neighborhood, lots of nice large houses with swimming pools. It also has good access to bus service routes to get downtown and other parts of the island.
Welcome to Island Transit
Broadway - 8th via Ave M
Ave S - Stewart Road

Great idea about calling city officials...thanks. Yes, I have a car but where I live now you must drive everywhere because everything is really spread out. My desire is to not have to rely on my car as much as possible.
