I very rarely go to a doctor, but recently have been having minor to moderate issues with my lower back muscles. After workout or working in a garage or yard, I've been getting muscle spasms / stiffness in my back. What kind of doctor would I see for this? Chiropractor or some kind of orthopedic / sports medicine doc?

Go to your regular docotor and they will refer you to an orthopedic. I have back problems. Chiros seem to be a quick fix.

I've suffered various back ailments for the last 20 years. Personally I do not believe in chiropractors, I think they are quack-ish, but many do swear by them. It sounds like you need to start with a regiment of rest, warm moist heat applied to the area and over the counter pain relievers. A general practitioner can recommend some basic stretches and things to do, as well as prescribe a mild muscle relaxer and refer you to a specialist/physical therapist if need be.

Thanks for info. I'll make an appointment with my doc and go from there. I was going to ask for recommendations next, but will hold off.

I have had lower back problems since I was a kid. As I got older, extended stooping would ruin me for 1-2 days. Then my shoulder started hurting too. That was it. I went to a chiro to try avoiding any medications. I was very skeptical, and still not sure of the pop your back thing. They scheduled a lot of short visits, but they also showed me stretches as a form of physical therapy. As long as I stick to the regimen, this is the best my back has ever been. Now mind you, this is about the only thing I would go to a chiro for. Everything else - family doctor.

Go to your regular dr., not a chiro. And, if you need some temporary relief until you get in to your dr. you might try massage - like a massage envy or something like that.

A good chiro is worth their weight in gold. Ask your friends for a recommendation - someone will know a great person to go to. What area of town are you in, maybe I can suggest someone?

The damage has already been done. I would just rest and take it easy for a week until it heals.
