I'll be in Houston in October for a week-long women's barbershop competition. Our group has to stay at the Hilton Americas downtown and since that's taking a chunk of money, we're looking for cheap food places within walking distance of the hotel.

I've never been to Houston and have been trying to research, but would like a local perspective on what places would be good. When I say walking distance, I mean within a mile or so of the hotel.

Thanks!

On Main Street, you can try Bombay Pizza, which has wraps for around $6 and the large pizzas are about $16.

Market Square might be a bit of a hike from the Hilton, but the Vietnamese restaurant, Les Ghivrals, is super cheap -- $2.50 to $3 for a sandwich and $6 or so for a noodle bowl; unfortunately, this location is only open during weekdays (if you can swing it, Little Vietnam is not far from downtown and has plenty of cheap sandwich places). There's also Frank's Pizza in Market Square where I think an oversized slice of pizza runs a few dollars.

Here's a fairly comprehensive list.

Cheap Eats - Houston | Urbanspoon

I like:

Josephine's (Italian) on Caroline
Franks Pizza
Dumpling King in the Park Shoppes

Just a few..

So many restaurants downtown close after the lunch crews come through. Bombay might be your best bet. Also consider looking in East downtown. Ninfa's on Navigation is great & not too pricey.. but sadly, not very walkable. Also, remember the light rail is walking distance from the Hilton America's.

Not sure exactly where that is, but look for Vietnamese. Those sandwhiches are dirt cheap and AWESOME. Houston is known for it's Vietnamese. Milam St has some places. Or chinese bbq. There is a market directly behind George R Brown convention center.

I thought they closed? Maybe not but I think we went there within the last 6 months and they were gone.

The light rail? I'm assuming that's public transportation? I'll look into that...

Thanks everyone!
