Pancho's appears to both well-known and universally-reviled.

Mexican + buffet = sucks. Go to an authentic Mexican restaurant like Gallileo's in Bellville.

Sheesh.

I've lived in Texas my whole life and I've never even heard of a Mexican food buffet.

I've never been to a Mexican buffet. Mexican food on Golden Corral level = fail. There are too many places to choose from around here.

Ranchero King on 45N is actually pretty good. Many people do not understand because they would only try a Mexican food Buffet if it were overpriced and in a trendy area or a large, national chain. But they do that even with most non-buffet Mexican restaurants. I guess being in a Mexican neighborhood with nothing but Mexicans in the establishment is too "ghetto" for most of them. Nevermind about the food! It's all about the ****in atmosphere and how well dressed the patrons are. This is why I hate so many of the stupid restaurants in the Heights.. you can tell from the outside that it's not even about the food, it's about hanging out and being seen with/by certain people.

Ranchero King has a buffet with food pretty close to what you would find in many Houston area Mexican homes...different types of carnes, fresh tortillas of both types, vegetables, and they even throw in the American stuff like fried fish and chicken and dinner rolls, mashed potatoes, etc. Even the red salsa is pretty authentic...not the tomato-water-not-even-spicy crap they serve to non-Mexicans, but the real stuff made pretty much entirely out of chiles. You also see many Mexicans actually eating there, which is a good sign. My only complaint is that there is no guacamole, but given the price of avocados in Houston, I can't really blame them for not including it.

It's about $20 for two people. Not bad. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Made some really good tacos and left feeling really satisfied.

Donerakis on Westheimer has a buffet every Sunday until 3PM.
It's pretty awesome but the food somehow isn't quite as good as normal hours ordering a single dish.
