Anyone have any idea of what would make a small bathroom (commode and sink only in room) smell like sewer gas (or poop) only during cold or cool weather. This room has done this as long as we have lived here and it only has that kind of sewer gas in cool weather .... of course it cooled off enough last night to bring that smell back. A long time ago we reported it to the builder but of course any time they came to check, it was a warm day and there was no odor; now the warranty has expired and the problem is back every winter.

Yuck. If it is a powder room that doesn't get used very often, I would guess that the water in the trap under the sink has evaporated and is allowing sewer gas in. The trap has to stay wet in order to work properly. Run the sink every other day, or so if it gets used infrequently.

I had this problem in the old house and it was the wax ring the toilet bowl sat on.

Default ^^^^ This ^^^

The cooler weather allows the gas to escape via convection since the ground and sewer is still quite warm. It will stop when the ground gets cold in the winter, and doesn't happen when the ground is cooler than the air.

We never notice it in the summer, only in the winter. And it is one of powder rooms but I think that sink does get used every day. Its driving me crazy but I will check some of the things that several of you have mentioned - thx.
