Do you have a programmable thermostat? If not, you need one. Cheaper than the heater and you'll save on heating in the winter and a/c in the summer. What you save on a/c in the summer in the first 1-2 months will likely pay for the thermostat.

An electric blanket saves as well, or as someone else said, just a nice big cozy blanket. That gas bill is WAY too high. You really should get it checked out.

I use the portable heater in the garage when working on the cars during winter nights.

My gas bill gets close to $75-$95 during the winter because I use the gas fireplace when I am home so that is a lot of hours.

I agree with other posters... this is really odd.
Our house is 2500 sqft, built in 1960, is kept warm all the time except at night when we like to sleep colder, and our bill in the winter is around 40 bucks. 50 tops. Single story but we have some cathedral ceilings.
