I've always waited for neighbors to put one in and then invite myself over. We have a great couple in our hood that has an "almost open door" policy.

Just sayin'...

The two story houses in the EC/Memorial area seem to have covered areas. They aren't very deep, but deep enough for fans, lighting, chairs and gliders.

But yes, most of the single story ranches don't. Even so, if you look at many of the new construction/spec homes, the covered areas they are pretty whimpy. You can rarely get a full dining set and a grill under them.

Do you have children and if so, how old are they? I noticed EasilyAmused says age 8 is the cutoff after which children no longer use the pool very much. Wondering if that is true for others...?

Rather than have my own pool, I'm inclined to travel a lot and use hotel pools in fun locations. Not sure if my family shares my vision, however...

I'd say more 8-10 range. Mileage differs for each kid. But they get more mobile at 8 and start house hopping, select sports begin, and they prefer hanging out without "mom."

If you belong to clubs, they would MUCH rather hang out there with game rooms, snack bars and multiple groups of kids. Its almost better to use the 40k and join a country club than buy a pool. And really most social memberships are much much less( 3500 range?) in most communities.

That does sound way more fun than maintaining a pool.
