The concept sounds great especially for the residents that live in that area, real estate will probably appreciate for them. I'm glad that it's not coming from the tax payer's money as there are other priorities. I hope they clean up long stretches of the Bayou as part of this project.

I found an image of the Buffalo Bayou Master Plan...

Not sure what parts are included in the work planned with the Kinder Foundation money but the plan looks great. This will be a large one-of-a-kind Bayou park/venue/trail system in the US...maybe the world.

From the Buffalo Bayou organization's website...

"As one of Houston’s most visible and popular parks, Buffalo Bayou from Shepherd Drive to the Sabine Street Bridge is an important part of our City’s urban green space system. While lush and green at first glance, the 158‐acre park is in fact filled with invasive species, overgrown, vine‐infested vegetation and non-native trees.

Buffalo Bayou Park Enhancements – 2011 - 2015
Through the establishment of a strong public‐private partnership led by the Buffalo Bayou Partnership (BBP), the City of Houston and Harris County Flood Control District, with catalyst funding from Houston’s Kinder Foundation, a major enhancement project is underway to improve aesthetic and recreational opportunities along the Shepherd to Sabine segment of Buffalo Bayou while simultaneously regaining the waterway’s flood conveyance capacity and environmental qualities. The comprehensive park enhancements are slated to begin in mid-2012. Harris County Flood Control District is planning to coordinate with these enhancements as it restores the bayou channel in a manner similar to its recent work upstream of the Sabine Street Bridge. The overall project is scheduled for completion in mid-2015."

I can't find the exact text now but I read somewhere that they are actually going to remove the non-native vegetation that has grown up for years and years and replace with native. Maybe the natural foliage you are used to actually isn't "natural"?

They've hired an "internationally recognized artist" using a mobile workstation to document invasive species and run the Invasive Plant Species Eradication Unit.

Thanks for info but Im further West from this project. The one our area is concerned with must be a flood control district plan. It is going to remove the forest around the smaller streams that feed into BB near Terry Hershey at the beltway.

Still preliminary on the retention ponds. Hopefully the hcfcd decides to utilize th Florine ditch and former Dow site when it's all said and done.
