Finally - they need to run an episode about where are these homes now. Saw an article in a local paper about the amazing home they built in Kemah for the Beach family. Article said the house is a total mess, uncared for and filthy. TVs are ripped out of the walls, etc. Article says contract says people can't sell those homes for so many years but that everyone is assuming that home will be sold as soon as the contract is up. What a shame.

the people they build these homes for are generally all poor. property taxes hit them the next year. the broadcast channel doesn't pay for it forever. i read an article the people try to sell ASAP as well or end up in foreclosure. i am beyond compassion fatigue but if a junky family lived in a falling apart trailer home do you think they know how to magically take care of some 4,000 sq ft home?

From the few shows I've seen, someone always tends to give them money that pays for a certain amount of yearly taxes. But I do remember reading once that someone lost the house to a tax foreclosure. Something like that.

i dont know how they do it but it is dangerous to give people who have not shown strict financial stability/knowledge a large check. only way this show would work in reality is if the homes are completely bought and paid for by the company (I bet these families are on the dole for the mortgage after a certain amount of time) and taxes somehow pre-paid (not possible) for an extended period of time like 10 years

just like those monster car shows. they take someone's ride, convert it into something ridiculous and the people are on the hook for trying to sell the thing as soon as the show is over.

the HGTV Dream Homes are similar. most come to market after a year or immediately because the people that win can't afford such high end homes/second homes. this was a few years ago but i read in the whole history only 1 home was kept by the winners

Yea, I agree! There are too many strings attached to a house so large. Utilities, property maintenance, taxes, etc. It's a good premise except it comes at a large price to most people.

I think people need to be taught the pitfalls of these aspects in high school - i.e. what it takes to care for a house, how "large checks" can ruin you, etc
