I filed a claim in small claims court and while I am confident about my case, I kind of want a lawyer's opinion ( especially since I was told today the court date will be about one year from now WTF!? ), I know consultations are mostly free (right?), but I doubt someone will really go over it without a fee. I don't plan on spending a whole lot of money on it. Does the City of Houston offer low cost legal services?
And, wasn't small claims supposed to be a fast way of resolving disputes!? 1 year... really!? What's happened to the Houston court system? Looks like it went drown the drain long ago... I even had to wait 1+ year for a court date for a simple speeding ticket. There's something seriously wrong with this. They need to hire more judges or whatever needs to be done to speed this process up. Not what I think of when I hear "right to a speedy trial". Ok, small claims is a different field...still.

I have never had a free legal consultation. Typically they charge a flat fee for a 1 hour consult $100-$200 depending on the type of law.

Oh, I always assumed the consultation was free!? I guess I was wrong. How much does it vary from lawyer to lawyer? Or is it somewhat the same everywhere?

Check out the Houston Lawyer Referral Service.
http://hlrs.org/for-the-public/
They will refer you to a lawyer that will spend 30 minutes with you for a low cost.

Hope that helps.
