Something also you need to look at is how much coverage the companies are providing. They seem to have this magic calculator that will determine "replacement cost" of the home and they will want to sell you that much insurance. On my new construction house, I had quotes that varied from $1800 to $3500. The lowest rate quoted coverage with a replacement cost of $180,000 and the highest rate quoted coverage with a replacement cost of $220,000. Both above what the home cost to be built...and they don't take into account the fact that about $30,000 of that cost was land...which isn't going to get blown away or burn down. $2500 is probably a lot closer to what you should expect to pay, should probably still be a little lower than that but don't expect much less than around $2,000.

Some of it is "inland". Clear Lake City (Houston proper) homes are on one regular insurance policy, and everyone pays a good premium for it.

Sometimes I get that thought to move to Sugar Land because I'd get more house for the monthly payment; in most cases a lot more house.
