suggest me a fruit bearing tree in my backyard (Houston: apartments, university)

There are apple, pear, peach, avocado and many other cultivars that do quite well in Houston, you just have to select one that doesn't need a cold cycle.

There are also a number of native citrus trees. Meyer lemons do very well, Republic of Texas orange trees require almost no maintenance, many species of grapefruit love Houston gumbo.

If you want lots of fruit and a healthy, happy tree then citrus is probably the easiest bet. Don't just buy any tree out of the nursery at Home Depot, though. Do some research and figure out what is going to be the right match for you.

We bought 2 Red Baron Peach trees last year and one had 2 small peaches on it. I haven't tasted peaches like that since childhood. They're a peach that doesn't need a ton of cold degree days so they do well in Houston. The flavor is excellent!

I believe we got them at JRN Nursery 4809 Breen 77086. It's near SH 249 & W Montgomery Rd. They have a huge selection. RCW Nursery 15809 Tomball Parkway also has a good selection; not as much as JRN. RCW is on the south frontage road just before the right turn onto Beltway 8 frontage Rd. The red Baron is a great fruit tree and I was really afraid the birds would get to the 2 peaches before they were fully ripe.

You might need to use fruit cages, wire mesh, nylon netting or bird deterrents to protect your fruit from birds.

Hi Elnina, if you are asking about either JRN or RCW, I believe they are. It really easy to drive by RCW. I think it used to be a used car lot.
