I grew up in a smaller town in Florida. When I first moved here, I figured a 10 mile drive to work wouldn't be that bad.

I was incorrect, consistently took 1 hr.+ to get to work.

I moved close to work, less than 5 miles.

Still takes 30 minutes to get to work, sometimes up to 45 to get home.

In my opinion, it really affects one's quality of life, however, ask someone who has lived here forever, and it's just another fact of life.

It does not matter where you are from. All major cities have commute times.

Yes, I suppose the point of my thread was to find people who moved to Houston from a smaller area, and were overwhelmed by the commute times in Houston.

I am a native New Yorker. I have lived (and driven) in Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami.

Rush hour traffic in all major cities are horrible. I hated Miami traffic with a passion. Forget about about LA.

You grew up in a small town. You can't compare rush hour traffic from the 4th largest city to a small town. Apples to oranges. All big cities suffer traffic during rush hours and even on weekends when the weather is great and everyone is out and about.

I've never had a very long commute, but always lived on the same side of town as the job. How are you 5-10 miles from work and still having it take that long to get there? Sounds odd.

Crossing Sam Houston on Westpark during rush hour takes about 15 minutes in and of itself. You sit there for 3-4 light cycles.

Oh... yeah, the Westpark is tough. Which is why I definitely wouldn't want it to be my only route available. And the more places get built out by Cinco SW, Seven Meadows, Cross Creek Ranch and the like, the worse it will get I'm afraid.

I'd try a different route in, if possible. And not Westheimer, it gets packed with all the people trying to escape the Westpark traffic. Park and Ride possible?

Exactly! Sometimes I'll skip Westpark to go Richmond, never usually works out in my favor. Same for Westheimer. Heading West on any of these streets, you're going to get screwed at Gessner and Sam Houston no matter what.
