We'll be in the market for a bigger house in west Pearland soon. We're currently in Shadow Creek Ranch right now. Those that have young kids in the area, what are your thoughts on Alvin ISD vs Pearland ISD schools? Trying to decide Shadow Creek (neighbors love Marek Elem) or Southern Trails vs Silver Lake or Silver Creek. Wife wants the former and I'm leaning towards the latter (1% lower taxes sweeten the pot).

The public schools are pretty much the same when it comes to the curriculum. Both district's population has grown as a result there are more kids in the class. I do see that Alvin offers more bilingual education due to the Hispanic population growth in Alvin

I think Shadow creek ranch will have their own high school in either 2013 or 2014, and another elementary and junior school to boot because of the poulation increase over there and in southern trails....Pearland ISD has better name recognition than Alvin isd, but your kids will get a good education in either district.

I like southern trails myself, very clean and well put together, and plus, you wont have to deal with the major traffic on the south side of 288/broadway heading over to silverlake/silvercreek, etc.

Good education is relative as it seems we live in a state where teachers teach to the test. If you can find a school that offers options beyond just building stamina to take a test that is better.

well, all school districts are teaching toward the state accountablity test, so they can make their yearly progress reports and the better the rating, the better the pay for the teachers and administrators at the school. I guess you will have to determine what area of 288 is best for you and your kids in that case..

my family is thinking about moving to southern trails ourselves this summer, and with its close proximity to the shopping at the new pearland town square and the heb/academy complex across from the mall, you have plenty of shopping and eating options....

The empty land south of Shadowcreek Ranch on the south side of Broadway between Kirby Dr. and Half Moon Bay Dr. was bought by the Alvin ISD a few years ago as a site for a new high school. I talked to a AISD board member last summer and asked specifically when we would see this construction begin. She said it would not begin anytime soon. She made it sound like 2014 might even be too optomistic. The reason is, another bond will have to be voted on for the construction to start, and the last bond has not been completely sold yet. Of course, that is subject to change, but that's what she said then.

There is already a new junior high for AISD down on south Kirby Dr., near Rodeo Palms.

Thanks for the replies. We put an offer on a house in Silvercreek. Love Southern Trails though too. We could afford about $20K more house with the lower taxes and HOA dues on that side of 288.

Once you move in, make sure that you join the Silvercreek yahoo group for information. It's not as active as the Silverlake group, but you can post questions and get answers about many different things. You have to live in Silvercreek to join.
