I specifically remember those two check boxes being on the application form.

1. Are you willing to sell your soul? Yes/No
2. How would you rate your ethics 1/5. With 1 being low enough to work for an O&G company to a 5, I believe I'm better than everyone else.

Not always, but it helps.

Last three jobs I got, I didnt have any contacts at those firms. However the longer you are in the field, more people become familiar with your work. Then again I'm more on the technical side of things.

No legitimate recruiter asks for money from the candidate. The employer pays the fees.

False, green religion zealots hate oils and those who work for them but my experience with a supermajor was very challenging work environment with high tech solutions to tough issues most dont care about just as long as the gasoline is there to drive their car. Very bright and honest people who challenge your intellect and all work hard despite the fat cat sterotype so prevalent. I cant speak for the smaller companies as I had no experience with them. We sold some real estate assets to a national home builder and must tell you there ethics stunk.

If you want to land a job in oil and gas, one way to do it is to look in those remove locations where positions are hard to fill. North Dakota comes to mind as well as perhaps south Texas. The jobs at these locations will be operations or engineering focused but if you want to get some oil and gas experience under your belt, try there for a year or two then interview with some field experience even if you work as a contractor in these field locations. My two cents. There are hundreds of non oil and gas experienced people wanting to get in the business from disciplines other than engineering or geoscientist. Oils tend to recruit on campus for these jobs. Good luck, PM me if you would like to discuss more

1. Work in an industry that produces the single most important commodity on earth other than water.
2 Work in the industry with the most oversight in the world other than the airlines.

Expand your recruiters. Talk to Culbertson, RobertHalf, Addison, etc. Unfortunately for finance, in the oil & gas business, a lot of the majors have offshored a good chunk of their finance staff, but i still see some jobs here with the majors though its fewer than it use to be...... and I continue to see finance jobs with the oil services companies like Halliburton, Baker, Weatherford, etc. Good Luck.

I'd also think about going back for your MBA, but only if you can get into a top 20 program -- otherwise you're just wasting your time / money. I dont know what kind of money you walked away from at your consulting job, but most MBA level positions are going to start at around $100k +/- if you can get one.

At many of the majors, it is about your GPA and what school you attended when you earned that top 5-10% of the class GPA.
