We are moving to Houston and we would like to live relatively close to MD Anderson, in the loop somewhere. However, my husband's position is only one year, so we think it would be easiest to live in an apartment to make the move as simple as possible, since we may have to move again a year later. Here are some things we are questioning..

We have a baby and would love a family friendly neighborhood/complex. Everyone says we should live in a house because we will be more accessible to other families, but I'm thinking... wouldn't it be better to have a pool, maintenance staff and not have to buy more furniture?! However, it is very important for me to make friends with other mom.s I'm very friendly so if they are around, I can make friends easily. Safety is important and I have read about a lot of break ins at apartments in the loop. Are you going to find that everywhere in the loop (houses, townhouses too) or just at apartments?

West U, Bellaire and Rice Village have been recommended but we are having trouble finding a date to visit... would it be okay to pick a complex online? Marquis at Bellaire looked nice but we are wondering if there would be other families--- does anyone live there and can let me know? Any other good places with families.. maybe townhouses, condos? I appreciate any responses. Thank you!

The areas you've cited all are nice and relatively safe. You might find it harder to meet families in an apartment complex since there are a lot fewer of them there, but in both of my inner Loop apartment complexes, I saw parents with small children fairly regularly. There are mom groups around the area -- try Meet-Up to find some or frequent areas where you might find other moms like the library's story hour.

It really just depends what's important to you and what your budget is and how much space you want. Apartment living is pretty hassle free, that's for sure :-)

It's all about your budget. You can be in an apartment but find a mommy group to hang out with. Loop neighborhoods tend to have more families with older children. 10+ and not so much infants and babies. The parents of infants and babies tend to be in condos/townhomes and apartments for now in the Loop.

For a year? I'd go with an apartment.

We were in the same situation a year and a half ago except my husband's position lasts for 3 years. There are very good (and large) mom groups in the areas you mentioned. Through the group I was able to join a playgroup with my daughter and meet other moms. It's been a godsend.

We rent an older 3-bedroom house in Bellaire, and it's worked out very well. It is more upkeep and fewer amenities than an apartment would have been, but we didn't have the budget to afford a large 2 or 3-bedroom apartment of the size we wanted in a nice complex. It would have been nice to have a pool, gym, etc, but the privacy of a house is really nice.

Hello everyone! I will be working with Houston ISD for the school year 2012-2013 although i am unsure as to my school assignment. I understand how large the area is... i initially thought of finding a 2 or 3 bedroom in apartment Katy until the daily commute came into the equation. Can anybody recommend a decent apartment complex that's close to a good elementary school? A good neighborhood maybe? I have my wife with me and three small children.
