I work in Sharpstown, in Southwest Houston, which of course is a terrible neighborhood. I have been living in Katy which is too far of a drive. I've been in Houston 1 year so I still don't really know all the neighborhoods. I'm a single woman and safety is definitely a big concern. Can anyone suggest a safe nice area with reasonable commute time or specific places for either a rental under $1200 or purchase for the same budget. I would prefer to not be in a "rental community" but am open to suggestions. I'm leaning toward Sugarland but I don't see a lot of good options in my budget.

I think you could get a one bedroom/study in CityCentre. Beltway and Memorial. It would be an easy commute. You should go check out the nightlife, shops, and restaurants one weekend.

If Domain is too pricey now, the Alexan at Memorial Bend is right across Memorial.
