Hi everyone

We are coming from Australia and we have not decided where we are going to live yet, but I am looking at these two schools for our 14 year old boy. I was just wondering if anyone can give me some information on: Riverwood Middle School kingwood (77345) and North Shore Middle School Houston (77015). I am trying to choose which one you will recommend as a better school for our my son. Our decision of the area to live will be based on the choice of one of these 2 schools.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks

I wouldnt EVER consider the North Shore school. These two schools are very far apart and one is in master planned community while other is in Industrial polluted North Shore. Very different demographics as well. I would assume the North Shore school is almost all on free lunch while the Kingwood school would be more middle class to upper.

If that is your only criteria then go with Kingwood.

Are you sure he will be in middle school? 14 is more high school age.

If you can afford it you may want to look into private school for your children. The public school in the state of Texas are the same in terms of curriculum. The curriculum is centered on teaching to the test. People who live in Texas and have never been outside the state of Texas or have not experienced private school have no clue what a proper education should entail. They will tell you what a good school is based on the ethnic or racial make-up of the school, economic make-up of the district, and how many students passed a below par minimal basic skills test. This information is useless to you coming from a different continent. No matter what race, economic level etc you are in if your children go to a Texas public school they will receive the same education as everyone else regardless of race, economic level or students receiving free lunch.

I disagree..the curriculum may be similiar but if you are in the Vanguard or IB program in Lamar it is far different than what you will get in regular classes say at Milby. Plus the demographics does matter. There are alot of distractions in classes where there are gang fights daily as in a Spring HS. There are distractions when kids are falling sick due to drugs as in Cleaveland HS. There are distractions when teachers cannot control the class. All of this creates a gossip day or week where kids focus more on those things than learning.

To the post from Aust., you really have to do your own research when it comes to schools in Texas. We have alot of problems down here like the rest of the public schools in the country, but the schools down here are at a greater disadvantage with all of the politics and below par standards. Please accept all that folks say on this board as opinions only and just that. I am sure you know what you want in a school and reading comments on this board will not really give you any real information until you physically go to the schools, talk to staff, and look at the curriculum.
