Judging from the increase of Houston's population and the steady decrease in Chicago's population it looks pretty inevitable that Houston will pass Chicago as the 3rd largest city in the USA... but when? Which cenus do you think Houston will become the 3rd largest city in the USA?

things could change so it may never happen... Who knows, maybe at one point the Woodlands will decide to incorporate and form a mid-size city that will balance out growth in Houston itself.

If the city of Houston can maintain its current growth rate, the economy doesn't have any hiccups in the next 8 years -AND- Chicago maintains its negative growth rate, it is possible that Houston could surpass Chicago in 2020. Looking at it more conservatively, the most probable census Houston will overtake Chicago will be 2030.

True, but non have true CBD's... "Hypothetically" If the Woodlands were to be serious about becoming a city (disclaimer: at the moment they are not), it could potentially slow the growth within Houston's city limits. I can see a future in which the "City" of the Woodlands may throw up some mid sized skyscrapers and truly takes an identity of it's own. Although nice sized, let's face it, Pearland, Sugar land, etc.... are nothing more than massive bedroom communities serving Houston itself.

Yeh I agree Truth......The Woodlands is situated just far enough north to take off as a "True" city. They have everything in place to do just that besides the courage of it's leaders to do just that. Hopefully Galveston can get it's act together as well and reverse it's waning decline in the Greater Houston Heir-achy.

But can you envision the metro area with a Booming Woodlands to the North, with a mid-sized downtown area and all? And a prosperous growing Galveston to the south? Good regional mass transit in place? I can only dream, but that truly would make the region a beast.

1. The Exxon campus is on Houston land not The Woodlands.

2. The Woodlands itself is on Houston land.

3. I agree that The Exxon thing is great for the area but although Houston has agreed to release TW, I doubt they will ever let them have the Exxon campus.

I don't think you guys understand how vast Houston control is.

Houston already provides services to more people than Chicago. A lot more. If you consider the city to be the number of people that the city looks after then the population of Houston is passed 4M. Houston's Jurisdiction is almost all of Harris County and into Montgomery and FB counties.
