I was traveling north on US-59 (Southwest Freeway) and noticed at 610 a mile marker sign "Mile Marker 518". I couldn't figure out where the mileage starts at because 518 miles to the south is well into Mexico and 518 miles to the north is well into Arkansas. Also by the time I made it to downtown I noticed another mile marker sign "Mile Marker 512"... so obviously they are counting from north to south instead of south to north.

Does anyone know why these mile marker signs are on US-59 and where the start and end of this mileage would be?

I found this thread on another site. Says Texas is laid out in a grid for markers.

Very interesting!... and odd! You would think that if TxDOT wants to number non-interstate freeway sections they would number it in a fashion that matches the highways actual mileage.

The US-59 segment in Houston won't be confusing very long when it is renumbered IH-69 at the end of the year =)
