According to recent Census estimates, Houston gained the most residents out of most of America's cities except for New York. It gained 40,000+ residents between 2010-2011. Based off these results, do you think that Houston will surpass Chicago in the near future becoming the 3rd largest city in America after New York nad Los Angeles?

Still 600K behind. That'll take 10 years at the current rate.

Who cares? Let me tell you, being big through rapid growth is often frustrating. Yesterday was a reminder of that for me. We tried to go to the zoo in Hermann Park. Not that long ago, we could always find a parking spot and the zoo was not underwhelmed with people. Yesterday, we had to give up as there was no available parking in sight and loads of cars trying to find spots.

The zoo offered free Tuesday afternoons for the summer but had to cancel that as the crowds were ridiculous and the park was overwhelmed with cars.

These days in Houston I almost feel like when I lived in Seoul where anyplace nice to go to was too crowded to be enjoyable.

+1 That's why I appreciate having good neighbors. Pool parties, biker bar visits, dinner invitations... works for me. I haven't tried to do anything inside the loop on the weekend in years, bar the few Astros games I've attended.

Just sayin'...

And man, once that happens Houston will be so different it will be unrecognizable! When it happens, an extensive heavy rail system will be delivered by angels from heaven, people will all sell their home in suburbs and, people will abandon their cars and only walk, 100 apartment/condo high rises will be built!

or...

Houston will be the same city the day before and after it passes Chicago. A great place to live with excellent ammenities for the money, but car centric.

By the way, if that post sounds like I'm mocking some posters obsessed with population rankings, I am.

I wonder how was Chicago's growth rate. It didn't appear of the list as far as largest numerical gain.

I can see Houston closing in on Chicago for the 2020 Census.
