What do you guys think about the new movie theater plans for midtown? Do you think it will give Midtown the push it really needs to give midtown a new spark?

Found this on HAIF

I think midtown is doing fine with out it, but it can't hurt to add one. I think for the people who live around there it would be a welcomed addition.

the sundance downtown, the drafthouse in midtown, edwards in upper kirby, landmark in river oaks. there will be plenty of theaters

what are the cross streets for the new alamo drafthouse? It has got to be only a few miles away from Sundance. But I bet the average resident in Midtown has no idea the Sundance theater exists

River Oaks and the Angelica are a $5 cab ride from Midtown. I don't see why it was needed.

It's a movie theater. Since when do movie theaters create a "growth spark"?

As a side note, Sundance is the best of the bunch. Having lived overseas for a long time, where cinemas are not general admission but rather are the same as plays, ballet, opera, sporting events, etc. in that it is assigned seating and you can book your seat ahead of time, I really appreciate the Sundance system. General admission is for the birds. I have never understood why move theaters are the only event where you go to sit in a seat and watch something but cannot reserve specific seats or choose your seats ahead of time.

I think the movie theatre demonstrates that midtown is a growth area, but it will only have a cumulative effect in the direction midtown was already proceeding. Midtown has a chance of growing into a true mixed use area that other areas of Houston dream about. Here's hoping that path is continued.

Studio Movie Grille allows you to reserve. I can't remember if there is a similar system for Alamo Drafthouse. I like the chain and would like a drafthouse here. I understand why they put it in Midtown to try to get young people. But, is it needed - will it create a spark? no.

again, the sundance is RIGHT there. midtown residents are too fresh from the burbs to venture that far?
