I am a female relocating around Aug. 27th to work at TMC. The problem is I am not moving the family right away and so I am looking for the cheapest possible apartment ($600 max) to rent that may also come furnished. Safety is a major issue as is commute time. I will probably be working nights 7-7, if that helps in figuring out best areas traffic-wise. I'm totally clueless about Houston and have only driven through, so any and all info on locations to look at would be helpful.

Well, your budget is tough. I would normally recommend living as close as possible, but you may have trouble finding a place with that budget. You do need to know though, that parking at TMC will be expensive so be sure to add that to your budget. If you could increase your budget, I'd say live close and walk, bike or take the light rail into work therefore saving you the hassle and expense of parking.

I am not sure about costs, but there is a Homestead Suites on Fannin Street just south of the TMC area and very close to a light rail station. There are also a few apartment complexes in the area of South Main and Kirby, but I cannot speak to the safety level or price. You might want to contact an apartment locator service and say you want to be within 5 miles of Texas Medical Center if at all possible.

Ask about the Meyerland district which is not far west of the TMC area.

Rice University is immediately west of TMC so if you try looking around there, you might find an apartment building with a mix of medical professionals and Rice students, but correct me if I'm wrong. Rice is an expensive school and the surrounding area is not cheap.

Be advised that in Houston, apartments are more expensive the closer to downtown you get. Anything under $600 or $700 per month in this metropolitan area, and safety becomes a concern. Houston is a fairly dangerous town.

I know nothing about Pearland, but it is a south suburb and a relatively convenient drive up Highway 288 to the Medical Center district from what I understand, and I am told a lot of TMC professionals live there. Long term it might be a good spot to start your house hunting. There might be apartment complexes there. Maybe the Pearland people can weigh in.

Fannin Street Station Apartments at Texas Medical Center Apartments in Houston, TX

Increase your budget to $750..and i believe they are not furnsihed.
But the metro rail goes right infront of this...There is a samsclub about 1/2 mile far.
about safety : no idea. As you are wroking 7-7 on most nights you are not at apt on most nights, so thats one point to consider.

Go on the Rice web site and look for student housing. Not dorms but local rentals. You'll find something in your price range in a decent neighborhood.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will definitely check out the Rice website. I wish I could increase my budget, however, my SO and I will be maintaining separate households for a few months (he's staying with the two kids) and I am the only one who can keep costs down. We pay 1050.00 for our rental now in Vegas. I'm a new grad, so money is tight. Is it a hassle to ride the metro rail from the Kingswood, Katy, or Missouri City areas? I'm assuming that using public transport would significantly reduce travel time to TMC.

If you can increase you budget to $750 to $850 you can get a decent 2-1 apt in Meyerland. Another good area is is Almeda & OST there are a look of nice apts in this area. $600 will get you into a area with a apt with a lot of crime a single female would not want to live in one of these complexes

There's no rail from those areas into TMC; you will have to take a bus from those areas into downtown area and then take the metro-rail or another bus into TMC. Not sure what the change-ups are but can ask as my cousin does a similar Katy-Museum District route using the bus. If you do do this, you can save on gas, car insurance, and parking fees. TMC parking fees are high -- I've paid $10 to park for just a couple hours.

I don't think you're going to find anything in the medical center that's "safe" and furnished for 600.

The price point you have mentioned will not be possible and furnished even harder.
