I highly recommend the Nikon D3200. It's one the best camera in it's category right now, and has a pretty good kit lens as well. I used to be a Canon user, but switched to Nikon because of the great user ergonomics on the camera, as well as the tack sharp Nikon lenses.

At Amazon for $699 :Amazon.com: Nikon D3200 24.2 MP CMOS Digital SLR with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR NIKKOR Zoom Lens (Red): Camera & Photo

Also, if it's in your budget, I recommend this flash...I use it in my shots: Amazon.com: Nikon SB-700 AF Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras: Electronics

Well, being a shutterbug myself, I can't agree with teeing a newbie up with an SLR (single lens reflex camera). I think you should start off with a simple point and shoot camera with a bit of zoom to it and learn HOW to take photos. Lighting, angles, shapes, rule of thirds, etc. Get a beginners book on photography, one that sends you off on "projects". Today's little mighty-might pocket cameras do alot to make good photos.

Once you get the ideas down on HOW to make photographs, then you can upgrade as applicable to higher quality equipment. Who knows, you might hate it and never pick up a camera again after a couple of months. I wouldn't lay down that kind of cash until I figure out if the hobby sticks.

With that in mind, get a 2nd hand camera from Houston Camera Exchange over on Richmond. Great folks.

Just my $.02,

Ronnie

Canon SX230HS is a good little camera it shoots get HD videos even pretty good videos in low light

$235 at Amazon you could get a used one in good condition cheaper from them to I got mine with 2 extra batteries used for $200
Amazon.com: Canon PowerShot SX230 HS 12.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with 14x Image Stabilized Zoom 28mm Wide-Angle Lens and 1080p Full-HD Video (Black): Camera & Photo

Next level up from the SX230HS is the Canon S95 it takes great photos the videos on the SX230HS are a little better

$340
Amazon.com: Canon PowerShot S95 10 MP Digital Camera with 3.8x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 3.0-Inch LCD: Electronics

For a tripod I recommend the 66" Targus it really is 3" to 5" taller fully extended at Target for $40. I am really surprised at the quality of this tripod and it even comes with a carrying bag. I went to Frys Bestbuy Microcenter & Compusa nobody had as good or as tall of a tripod for the price of Target the closest tripod was like $65 to $70 and legs were much skinnier so if you have a DSLR $600+ camera this tripod would have fallen apart with a heaver camera

I'd check Craigslist to buy -- lots of hobbyists and professionals upgrade their cameras frequently and you can usually find a solid camera for half the price.

I do not recommend geting a DSLR yet get a good mid level camera & use it for 6 months or so if you really get into taking pictures and shooting video then upgrade to a DSLR after you have a good idea how to use a camera

DSLR is the way to go.

Go to the Canon site and you can purchase a refurbished for a very good price: Add a 15% or 20% off coupon and you have yourself an awesome deal. Get the coupons from the fatwallet site. Usually refurbished are almost brand new and you can tell by the number of photo counts how much was used.

I am about to list a brand new EOS T1i Body only for $400 on Crailglist. That's a fantastic price for the T2i
