Ive got my brother in law coming into town on Monday. He wants to go to some restaurants but I don't know anything outside of the Woodlands really. Can someone tell me what places have some nice upscale dining with a nice hip atmosphere? I think he wants something trendy. Also he just turned 21 so probably somewhere that not filled with old people. And if it's near some nice bars that would be good too, I haven't really experienced the Houston nightlife.

I don't want to spend more than $100 for two people.

both of those are doable for $100 if you limit your alcohol intake

id describe them both as hip and pulling quite a bit of younger people especially the bar inside Haven and the Haymerchant. both are popular eateries in Houston and local.

You can't have dinner at Anvil but it is within walking distance from lots of restaurants including Underbelly

I've done Underbelly --> Haymerchant --> Anvil --> Catbirds or Poison girl for a good bar crawl. end up at Alabama Ice House (a bit of a drunk walk) for late night tacos plus more beer. that is a good time

Anvil is kind of the more upscale place. Catbird's and Poison Girl are kind of hip and dive barish. Maybe not what he wants.

poison girl is a dive bar for people who dont know what a dive bar is. yes totally different from anvil but anvil can be overwhelming with the amount of douche in such a small place. when youve had a few drinks and need to step out catbirds is a good place to get back to normal

The others mentioned some good restaurants but afterward:

Poison Girl is definitely a great place to take someone who just turned 21. Love the freaking place!

For different tastes, Bacchus, Brasil and Agora are within easy pedestrian distance form Poison Girl and offer a great variety of ambience.

Brasil has a buzzing vibe in a conventional block building.
Agora across the street has a buzzing vibe in a character-filled, old two story house setting.
Bacchus is very chillin' but in a very attractive building and patio layout. (Thin style pizza is actually quite good there.)

They all serve alcohol though Agora does not serve food.

He might look over the menus at www.houstonrestaurantweeks.com. Right now a lot of more upscale places have a 3 course meal for $35. And, $5 of that goes to the Houston Food Bank.
