And I took a look at some of the European routes you mentioned. Frankfurt-Berlin is about 30 miles longer than the texas route and cost $164 and takes 4 hours. Frankfurt-Munich is 30 miles shorter than the texas route, takes over 3 hours and cost $135. The German trains stop a lot which adds time. But they need to stop in order to generate enough passengers to cover the costs. Paris to Brussels is the cheapest at $84. It only takes 90 minutes but is 60 miles shorter than the texas route. Again it will have way more travelers though.

Most Europeans have "passes" the same we have a metro card. They pay less then the one time fare rates. Second, fares are not determined simply by distance. Obviously express fares are more then locals. Faster trains more then the slower. But there are other factors as well. Anyway, not to beat a dead horse here (too late), but Amtrak is run by the government. The government always has and always will subsidize poor areas by over charging the rich areas. Think of it as wealth distribution if you want. The northeast corridor is NOT paying a market rate and they never will as they have subsidize the entire system! I think the Dallas to Houston route would be $75 to $90 for coach and first class tickets probably $150 to $200.

I think so too. Houston to Dallas is not DC to Boston. A NE route will always be more expensive.

$75 seems about right for a Houston to Dallas route

That may seem right as to what they might be able to charge but has nothing to do with the cost of operating the line. It will cost way more to operate than that. I have yet to see anyone give any factual info regarding cost of operation. I did. 43 cents per passenger mile operating costs and 50 million per mile of rail in construction costs. There is no way that can be done at $75.

If that argument is that they will charge $75 and the gov't will subsidize the rest then I guess that works but is there really a point to that.

Bwahahahaha! You ain't from Texas are you. Tell me where in Europe there are ranges for grazing all over hell and back like in Texas. I've lived in the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and Italy and there's nothing like the free-range style cattle grazing like Texas. Why does Europe import it's beef from the US, Japan and Argentina? Secondly, have you EVER seen a cattle catcher on any train in Europe? No, you haven't.

Sheesh.
