I have NEVER seen so many dead dogs on the Interstates and roadways than I have in Houston. I moved from the DC/MD/VA area in March and I have lived all over the Southeast, out West, and the Northeast. This includes major cities and small towns.

And these are HUGE dogs (maybe because of decompositional bloat). Do any of the Houstonians here have any idea why? I live in the Spring area off Interstate 45. I also see tons of dead armadillos, a few racoons, and yes even a dead skunk. I'm just accustomed to seeing a dead deer or two during deer season.

I'm curious about this too. I recently saw an article about a young pit pull who was put in a bag and tossed out on the freeway north of Houston. The pup survived and was rescued. Who are the cowards that do these things?

Wanna know what's odd? We come into downtown on Almeda from Pearland every day and I've seen more dead dogs outside the Humane Society buliding on Almeda than any other place I've ever been. Either they have escapees or folks just dump their dogs, unteathered, by the front door. It sucks!

i dont have stray animal problems in my neighborhood. pitbulls are not necessary aggressive, but like any dog you dont want some strange one approaching you.

houston has a good sized population of scummy people who dont understand the concept of a pet. there is a ring of pitbull fights and animal mutilators that have not all been caught. when they kill the animals they dump their bodies along the road it looks like. there is also a population of dumb redneck truck owners that think the back of a truck is a safe place to put an animal. ive seen a dog fly out the back of a truck on 59. needless to say it died a horrific death. horrible people

I'm not sure I want to know, but what is an animal mutilator?

Funny you mention that, I have seen plenty of roadkill too and they are all nearby the major freeways/highways (Beltway, Westpark, I-10)

It's sad...

The number of dead animals really shocked me when I moved here. We moved away for several years and one of my main concerns about coming back was all the dead dogs and cats on the roads here. I find it very upsetting. I saw very few when I lived in NC and I have only ever seen ONE dead cat in the UK, no dogs at all. London is a huge city but you just don't see it over there. I used to live in Spring years ago and one day I went 59 to downtown because of traffic problems on 45 and I counted 21 animals in various stages of decomposition. I have never forgotten it, just awful. All pets, not wild animals. Maybe Animal Control or who-ever pick them up in other places where they are just left here. I wish people would look after their animals. It is so sad.

OK, what are the theories here? Are people just dumping unwanted pets on the highway? That makes no sense. Are they just "wild" dogs? If so why are they attracted to highways. It's not terribly easy to get past the service roads onto the highways on 45.
