The Woodlands puts you closer to a much bigger job market in Houston, and schools, etc. in The Woodlands are generally uniformly good.

Austin has natural beauty and a cool college-town atmosphere going for it, but it is a smaller area and the cost of living is higher. You'll also pay what I call the "Austin premium," where employers generally pay less than in Dallas or Houston simply for the privilege of living in such a cool, hip town.

Personally, I think the Woodlands area is an ideal place to raise a family. We will be living right outside of the Woodlands in Auburn Lakes. We are moving there from So. CA in about three months. We love the friendliness of the people, the beautiful, clean, master-planned neighborhoods, and the fact that there are many things culturally/entertainment wise for our children to benefit from in the Houston area. We could not be happier with our choice!

"Cool" and "hip" are rather subjective... but yes, that's what we're told. I think it has more to do with there being more qualified workers there (Univ of Texas pumping out so many grads) to fill the jobs... there is just more competition for certain jobs - supply and demand.

Also, there is no way the cost of living is higher in Austin than The Woodlands. Comparing those two places is like comparing brownies to hash brownies.

In my opinion, the best thing about The Woodlands is the huge amount of running trails and parks.
I think you can run/ride bicycle through the whole city.
I bet kids really enjoy them.

Keep in mind, it's a very preppy, conservative area, and there's also some negatives to that.

Austin is a city. The Woodlands is burb
Round Rock v. Woodlands would a better comparison.
You will get more for your rental money in The Woodland and Round Rock than you will get in Austin in comparatively safe areas.
And, it depends where your employment is.
