Default Germany...

Take a direct flight to Frankfurt, hop on the train at the airport and make your way to the Christmarkets in the small cities as you make your way to Nuremberg and Munich. The scenes are surreal, just like what you see on postcards of Christmas in Germany. The Christmarket in Nuremberg is the best. Drink plenty of gluehwein and eat foot long sausages and enjoy the people and the scenes! Cool stuff to purchase, and cold as heck, take warm clothes, gloves, heat packets.

Most good places are booked months, and a year in advance, but you will still be able find a place. The places get crowded, lots of fun, shopping. We did this a few years ago and stayed in a couple of small cities on the way to the big ones, very convenient, we stayed not too far from the train/metro stations.

If you are looking for a more winter feel and maybe snow I'd say Gatlinburg, TN. The whole area is decorated great for Christmas and you should rent a cabin in the mountains. Most of the cabins are decorated inside for Christmas as well. I'm partial as I do this most years it is a great place.

It would help if you mentioned what places you are interested in visiting first.

Anyways for what it's worth Nicaragua is an up and coming destination that is relatively safe, not to mention the fact that it is very affordable as well (think Costa Rica, but more affordable). Also United has nonstop flights to Managua from Intercontinental with a flight time of only 2 hours and 30 minutes.

You might also be interested in Roatan in Honduras as well given that it has some of the best scuba diving in the Western Hemisphere and it is also serviced by nonstop flights from Houston via United with a flight time of 2 hours and 14 minutes.

Correction, since you mentioned snow, I would look into either Colorado, New Mexico, or Utah.

Denver and Colorado Springs in particular has alot of stuff to do in the winter time, most of which does not involve driving to one of the ski resorts in the mountains.
