Katy is probably the second best alternative, especially somewhere like "Green Trails".

We moved back from the UK 2 years ago but paid for the whole move ourselves. We shipped everything in a 40ft container, bought two cars (with a reasonable down-payment, now all paid for), all appliances large and small etc. and it came to a whole lot less than 80K! That is a pretty good allowance I would think. Shipping our household goods was much cheaper than replacing everything.

I would tell you to check into The Woodlands. This place is great, quiet, tree lined streets close to everything you will need. Lots of Lease homes under $2000 @ month. We have a bus system which you are able to ride from the park and ride to Downtown and back at a fair price. This way it would be easy to get by with one car. Houston traffic is very bad unless you leave at 5 AM and return around 2PM. Hope this helps..

Thanks all for your advice and replies.

I plan to head out to Houston by end of this month for a 3 week trip which i'll be hiring a car to drive around all the areas you have mentioned.

Kids? No I don't and will never have those blood sucking things. But honestly I don't see how that changes anything. Ikea furniture is cheap and a house you can get in a nice area to rent for is probably around 2k month.

You don't see how it changes anything, because you don't have kids.

I'd be much better off if all they sucked was blood!

You might be able get a relocation loan to buy a house. Otherwise waiting to get US credit could take a while. Houston is a car city. Keep in mind that you almost certainly have to buy one or probably two cars. Unless you want your wife to go crazy.

I would recommend either Pearland, Fall Creek or Summerwood. If you kids attend public school there is no charge, but if you enroll them in a private school then there will be.
