Growth transforms rural areas north of Houston to urban centers - Houston Chronicle

Quote:
Conroe native Jay Ross Martin says he never imagined his rural hometown in the piney woods developing bustling retail centers, a thriving housing market and a population that's more than doubled in the past 20 years.

The change has catapulted Conroe, the county seat of Montgomery County, into a "new world," says Martin, a former city councilman.

Increasingly, that new world is more like the city than the country.

This year the U.S. Census Bureau made it official by designating an area surrounding Conroe and The Woodlands as a "large urbanized transit area." The designation, based on its population exceeding 200,000, makes the area eligible for federal transportation dollars.

Thirty-six new large urbanized areas were added to the Census Bureau list this year...............
Welcome to the big boy club Conroerians

Montgomery County is rapidly changing. Should be a nice change for Houston in the next couple of decades.

I really think the Census is going to designate Montgomery as a core county. Right now only Harris, Brazoria, Fort Bend and Galveston counties are core counties.

a change in designation would change the MSA size though as commuting patterns are determined to core counties.

UA population 2000- 136,000
UA population 20120- 240,000

The urban area almost doubled in population

The other UAs in the metro (Houston, Texas City and Lake Jackson) are growing rapidly too.

Unfortunately, Galveston no longer has an Urban are. It is now designated as an Urban Cluster

That's not much considering the projections are for 18,000 years into the future, lmao!

Its basically an urban area but it does not meet the 50,000 threshold. Galvestons population dropped and lost the UA classification

Why isn't it a core county?

They'll get more money for transportation?
what for?, there's already 8 lanes of highway all the way past Conroe and 105 from Conroe to Lake Conroe has 6 lanes plus the turning lane.
And in The Woodlands the middle shoulder is so wide that you could easily add 4 more lanes.

They are getting money for local transportation and reverse commutes.

We are not talking about highway level funding here. We are talking $2,000,000
