Have you ever been to Houston? It is not a "walkable" city. There are a couple of other threads (just below yours) that outline in great detail how poor the public transportation is here. I think you will struggle financially taking cabs/renting a car.

As for insurance - when we immigrated from Canada, we had to establish that we were "insurable" before we could be insured. We also had no credit rating. You will truly be a blank slate coming here from the UK. To apply for a mortgage here in the US you have to show a couple months of pay stubs, a couple of months of bank statements (where balances and deposits must be explained with proof of where the money came from), proof of employment, etc. Also, what about your Visa? Which type are you applying for or getting?

I currently have a B1/B2 Visa. But they will be sponsoring me for a H1B visa.
I have been to Houston twice (just came back last weekend) and yes.. it is not a walkable city!
