I am moving to Houston for the summer to intern for Shell Oil in downtown. I currently live in Boulder, CO so I know Houston will be quite a change. I am currently a college student and am looking for safe, affordable apartment or housing close to downtown. I will NOT have a car so I have to be closer to the metro rail or the bus system. Can anyone suggest a district that I should look into? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Additional Info.

There are several options, but this will depend on your budget.

Your budget will be the most important. But do keep in mind that it will be difficult to navigate the city with just public transportation. The MetroRail inside the city is still being worked on and won't be finished for another year or 2. The only rail up and running is the line running on Main St. Consider getting a bike.

Looking to rent a place for less than $800 a month. The cheaper the better. I don't mind living in a not as nice place, just prefer that the neighborhood is safe

You may be able to find an apt in a 4-plex in Montrose for $800.

Also, I just happened to have read this article in Swamplot of a building being fixed up in Midtown. You'll get an idea of the building if you read through the comments. I think they were $600 all bills paid. Location is good but maybe some dodgy tenants.

When a friend of mine interned for Shell, they provided stipends towards rental cars for the summer, as they are well aware of the lack of public transportation and appropriate housing close to work. Might want to reach out to HR about this.
