Our family is soon to move to Houston from Australia. My husband will be working in Bechtel office near Galleria. We would like a commute of 15 min or less in a neighborhood with good private schools for the children, 3 and 5. We have a budget of $4000 a month. Can anyone suggest best suburbs to start looking at?

I'd start in an area bounded by the 610 to the east, Beltway 8 to the west, Westheimer to the south and the I-10. Also look at University Place and Bellaire. But if you do a map search of lease listings on HAR and bound the search by $3000 - $4000 you'll see there isn't a whole lot to choose from especially assuming you want a single family home in a family friendly location.

610 Val Lena Dr, Houston, TX 77024 - HAR.com

I like this one, albeit a bit small and more like 20 mins from work. Or how about St. Georges Place and walk to work? Between Richmond, Chimney Rock and West Alabama.

Proximity to the right private school might be an issue, you might want to research this first.

Maybe others will have some more imaginative suggestions.

15 minute commute or less? Was that a typo?

The Galleria areais pretty congested. It would take you 15 minutes just to get around the Galleria area. For suburbs, others can tell you distance and best (we are city folk) but I'd guess that your closest suburb option would be Sugarland, which is maybe 45 min with traffic?

Much closer would be in city options of Bellaire, West University, Rice Village.

Getting a room at the Westin IN the Galleria will barely get you a 15 minute commute. You will need to adjust some of your needs to get a fit.

The west park toll road is a straight shot from west houston and a reasonable commute. Find a school first and then a neighborhood with nice amenities. Usually you make friends thru your kids activities when they are that little. That being said the rental market is hot and the nice executive rentals go fast. For 4000 you should be able to get a nice home with a pool but be prepared to get your application in fast. Many of those are getting multiple offers. If you are looking at private school there are certain neighborhoods that have bus pick ups at AWTY international school or the british school.

I live in the Energy Corridor, close to West Memorial, and there are a LOT of ex-pats in oil and gas out here. My husband currently works at the Bechtel office and he has about a 25-minute commute, but we live in Briar Forest, which is further west than West Mem. So my recommendation would be West Memorial. Your commute should be shorter (20 minutes?). Lots of good schools and friendly people.
