HI! Looking for some advice on where exactly to move. My husband will be working along 8 bt I-10 and 290...Katy looks to be the closest area to live. We are looking for a family neighborhood...2 elementary aged kids, GREAT schools etc...close to shopping etc...Looking to spend about 400k....give or take. I am wondering how long a commute to this area is from The Woodlands? Sugarland? Taking any and all suggestions on picking an area to buy in. ALSO< not adverse to renting closer into Houston....maybe a townhouse? Thoughts????

Katy does have great schools. 400k will get you a nice place in Katy. Renting closer in will make schools a little more challenging. Start with Green Trails, nice area, Katy schools, not to far out. Cinco Ranch, Firethorne, Cross creek Ranch are other great master planned areas with excellent family amenities.

Green trails is good. Some parts of spring branch are possibility if you'll open to looking a 60's ranches under 2300 sqft.

Cy-Fair would be closer. It would be the west 290 area near Highway 6.

Throw a dart on a map of Katy.. to be honest its all the same...

No reason to rent closer to Houston considering you definitely want the suburban life. Just start paying off a house that you can own. Its a better choice financially.

Honestly I think the commute varies, but coming in on 290 can be really bad at times, it needs another upgrade for sure.

Default Very close in town, and great neighborhood.

Issue here is that you can build to if you can find a fill in lot. I just ran across one in a very ideal location, right between I-10 and 290, possibly 10 minutes to beltway. I have a builder that would build if you are interested, cost a lot less than an old 60's ranch house too! Not too mention you would have equity afterwards in a relatively short amount of time.
PM me if you want some more details
Thanks
-William

We are also moving to Houston in June! If you are looking for good schools then Katy/Cinco Ranch. The best elementary school I've been told about is 'Williams' followed closely by Exley. One of my best friends is American and she is strongly advising us to buy out in Katy as it's very family friendly and a close enough commute for my husbands work. He will be working in the 'energy corridor'. If you are buying you also need to consider 'resale' if you should wish to sell up. I am visiting 'Williams Elementary' next week and a private school so we can compare. You will also need to remember that the school you like may not zone into the house you like! Just as it is in the UK. Good luck!

Thanks PaulineB! We will be making some visits soon. My husband will be in the "Energy Corridor" as well....Thinking this could wind up being a 2-3 yr venture...so confused about buying as Lots to consider.
