I have a piece of art I'd like looked at. I'm pretty sure it's worth exactly what I paid for it (nothing) but want to take it into a gallery to be sure. Any recommendations for a reputable place inside the loop? Thanks.

What type of art is it -- painting, print, drawing, sculpture, or ???? How did you acquire it? A little more information would be helpful, as not all gallerists or appraisers are expert in all fields. Any of them probably will charge you to look at it.

If there's a signature, you can research the name in one of the many online art databases. If it's a work on paper, looking at it with a magnifying glass can help you tell if it's a reproduction or an original.

The art is a pencil drawing - not sure if it's original or a copy -- but it's in its original frame with the name of the gallery/owner on the front and I believe the print number on it as well (will have to double-check). The drawing is done by a very well-known American artist. I've found similar copies of the picture available online priced anywhere from $25 to $6000. I most recently found a live auction site that sold a copy for $80.

I acquired it from the trash. Seriously. I had just moved to Houston and had no decor/minimal furniture in my apartment, so one day when I was taking my trash out to the dumpster, I found this print and another one by the dumpster. It's just not my taste, to be honest, so it would be nice to get rid of it.

If there's a number and a signature on the front, it could be an original print made by the artist. My suggestion: contact the Houston Museum of Fine Arts for the name of a curator on their staff who specializes in American art, drawings or prints. Send them a letter and enclose photos of the work (front and back, taken without flash). If the work has more than decorative value, the curator should be able to suggest how to go about appraising and selling it.

It does have a number and the artist's signature. Thank you so much! Never thought of contacting MFA!
