Sheila Jackson Lee wants feds to collect data on local traffic stops | Texas on the Potomac | a Chron.com blog

This is already done in many parts of the country. She also got slammed for saying SS benefits are entitlements.

You read the comments on chron.com, and it's appalling. Not only are they insulting to her, they are insulting to the people that elect her. The community must keep electing her for a reason.

Also, perhaps in her community, racial profiling is an issue.

Still, I don't get it. And the many outsiders I know do not get it either (as you probably know, I work with a lot of non-Texans).

It all comes across as very racist to us.

Thoughts?

It probably has more to do with her long history of stupid or outrageous comments than these particular comments.

every politician has a long history of stupid and outrageous comments. she lives in a historically minority district (#1), she's black (#2), she's a female (#3), she is outspoken (#4), she has been in "power" for a really long time (#5).

she is not even near the craziest local houston politician

but BIG tip: NEVER read the chronicle comments. they must advertise in the KKK mailer because the amount of pure jaw dropping things I have read on there will last me for the rest of my life. if the comments aren't about hating hispanics or blacks it is about how women are scum, texas should be it's own nation, or how we should force people at gun point to carry weapons to illustrate how much freedom we have

She's just an outspoken, black, Congresswoman with a set of ideas. She takes a lot of risk by having an opinion, and suffers a lot of personal attacks because she's a black woman. [mod cut: not needed]

This. Also, you do realize that SS benefits are NOT entitlements(unless someone is receiving them and has not paid into it). Entitlements are funds given out to those who have not put their fair share into the pot.

I don't know. They seem over the top, even for chron.com.

I don't believe the definition of "entitlement" actually has any regard to how much one deserves the claim. It's used vaguely.

For me, it's this. If someone else wanted a study done on profiling at traffic stops, I would think that's probably a good idea. Once I see her name, though,I usually skip whatever she is saying. It started with her complaint that we should name more hurricanes with "black" names. Really? That's a real problem? Profiling - I get that issue. Hurricane names are stupid.

Watching that clip, where she took a cell call during a town hall meeting, didn't help.

lol please tell me that did not happen. I really want to dislike her but stuff like that is just too funny. I can't help but laugh every time I see her clamoring for the camera at every opportunity. So far I haven't seen her do any real harm so I'm willing to see her stay in office just so I can keep laughing at her.

She spoke at an event I went to years ago and I think I rolled my eyes enough during her speech to cause permanent eye damage. She was self promoting at an event that had nothing to do with her but was in honor of veterans. Sitting there listening to her I couldn't help but think she was the black female version of Donald Trump. Most of us dislike Donald Trump but enjoy watching him make a fool of himself anytime a camera is near. Same goes for SJL.
