My husband (pilot) has been displaced from his east coast base, so we are tentatively planning a move so he doesn't have his horrible commute to Vegas from New York. One possible base is Houston. I flew in last night and staying with a friend until Fri morning. Just to look around and get a feeling for it. She is in Kingwood, and her community is pretty, but I'm realizing it's not for us. We live in the woods. Small house, but lots of space, quiet, empty roads. Nature. That's not here. And while I could adjust, my oldest son is autistic, and he really relies on nature to quiet his mind. I'm not sure I could move him here.

It seems this area of TX is really developed. Are there any areas within 90 minutes of Hobby that aren't? Where you could hike and have some space? I don't know if I'm making myself clear... But I feel like everyone is on top of one another in this neighborhood.

We are looking to rent, not buy, and have a budget of $1600 a month.

Thanks so much for ANY input!! I really want to make the most of today, and now that I'm here, I realize that I planned wrong.

Thanks again!!

Suz

Try Alvin, Texas for ranch size lots.

Since you are in Kingwood, take a look east of Kingwood. Once you cross Lake Houston you get to some undeveloped areas that might fit your need. The drive to Hobby off rush hour would not come close to exceeding your 45 minute commute criteria. Also drive further north of Kingwood along US59 for less developed areas fitting your needs. The Alvin suggestion is a very good one too and might be your best fit.

Yes, much of Houston is developed, but this is Texas. There are HUGE chunks of land, no matter where you look.

If Hobby is his base, I would look to Southeast Houston/TX, not Kingwood (KW would better serve Bush, not Hobby). Try Alvin, as LiT mentioned. Or any of the areas in Brazoria county. You will find LOTS of communities with 3-5-10 acre plots. You really need a realtor familiar with this area. It's too big to just "hunt around".

Here's a crude map showing Houston and the area around it. The part I looped in Orange is all within 90 minutes of Hobby, and large swaths of it are mostly undeveloped.

That circle is much too large in diameter. Also note that some (if not most) of that undeveloped land = active oil fields / ranch land / farm land.

Alvin or Dickinson. You'll be able to find houses with plenty of outside space.
Depending on your budget, there are houses with lots of land in Friendswood as well, and Friendwood ISD is excellent.
