We do have one. A supertall is defined by being at least 1,000 feet. The JP Morgan Chase Tower downtown is 1,002 feet tall.

Honestly I think we're lucky enough to have the number of skyscrapers we do considering how spread out Houston is. We could have ended up with a skyline like Atlanta, Dallas or Phoenix.

If Midland is proposing this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_...Midland,_Texas), I don't see why Houston can't build a super tall to showcase our economic sucess.

Because somewhere above 40 stories is when you must comply with the high-rise building code which means more costs, and a longer construction time. Developers have found that a 40 story office tower is desirable, especially if it is a speculative building. It allows you to get the most efficient space without triggering the additional costs.

Now, we could see a building taller (and grander) if there is a corporation that is building its own trophy tower.

Is anyone even building new office space in Downtown anymore, who wants to endure the commute all the way over there?

Makes more sense to build office space in the Energy Corridor or Uptown. Though getting to Uptown is becoming more and more of a headache with each passing year.

Once Grand Parkway is completed there will be less and less of a reason to build skyscrapers. Segments E and D will be fully open by year's end. Once a connection is made to the Woodlands and later to Riverstone and Sienna Plantation there will be very little reason to continue building expensive towers inside Houston anymore.

Boom in office construction – Houston, Texas | Metrostudy Report | Primary and secondary housing market information, research and consulting.

There you go office space construction has moved out to the Beltway...eventually it'll move out to Grand Parkway.

Tearing down junk and building skyscrapers inside Houston city limits is becoming a waste of money.
Unfortunately Houston claims ETJ status all the way out to Grand Parkway, hopefully the rampant apartment builds in ETJ Houston won't destroy that portion of the city too.

You should probably check vacancy rates and new office construction Downtown. It is still the leader.

I don't see how you can jump to this conclusion when there's stll office construction going on downtown as we speak. 2 Office Towers have gone up in the last 4 years and there's already more planned or either approved. That's better than alot of cities.

I'm just happy that we see construction continuing in Houston. Generally speaking, it's a sign of more jobs and prosperity. There isn't much of a construction boom happening in Detroit that I'm aware.
