My husband works in Galveston, and we chose not to live there and definitely will not send our kids to school there. We live in Friendswood, and door to door..his commute is about 45 min to an hour each day depending on the traffic on Broadway in Galveston. If you want to be closer, i would consider League City..not sure if I would move any further south than League City though.

Myself and my husband are thinking about relocating to the Galveston area from Texarkana TX, what are the best "small town" areas to live with a decent living cost?

For your budget, Friendswood. There are better parts of Galveston, but they aren't in your budget.

Depends on whether you have kids or not.

1) Without kids, Galveston is a playpen full of many enjoyments.

2) With school aged kids, Galveston is not best place to nurture children through school.

Sincerely,
An empty nester with 2nd home in Gtown.

Looks like the original post is old, and the above comment is resurrecting it.

For the best suggestions, you'll need to provide your budget, work location (if any), family situation (kids- Yes/No, ages etc).

I agree with PP that if you are empty nesters, being on Galveston Island itself is worth a consideration (maybe), but for any other situation, you probably need to live on the Mainland.

Areas to consider closest to the Island and with the lowest housing costs are going to be Santa Fe, Dickinson and Texas City. The first two are the ones that I hear the best things about.

The nicer suburbs with more shopping/amenities and nicer homes are going to be midway between Galveston and Houston, and would include League City, Clear Lake and Friendswood, and those would be a 25-45 minute commute to Galveston depending on where you are. And, they are large suburbs, not what you would describe as having a "small town" feel, with the possible exception of Friendswood.

I don't need to know your budget, work location, or family situation. That's way too personal and many people don't/shouldn't share that info on the net anyway.

With that said, I would look in the Dickinson (77539) or League City (77573) area and maybe into parts of Friendswood (77546).

Many forget that Santa Fe is up and coming along very nicely. Santa Fe is closer to coast with both small town and large town amenities. That if Galveston living isn't for you.

Just my opinion that League City has become way too crowded. Bay Area Blvd at I-45 has become a virtual parking lot. The congestion is absurd.

The schools on Galveston island are pretty poor. I would recommend looking hard for something in CCISD/League City that fits your budget. You might try looking around Countryside off of 518, west of Bay Area Blvd.

Where are the large town amenities in Santa Fe? Does Santa Fe extend to I-45?
