I live in alief isd and I am a bit confused on taxes here. This is my first year paying these taxes. I was wondering if anyone knows if county taxes and property taxes are the same or are they different individual taxes? I was not sent a tax statement for alief isd till today but I already payed the one for the property tax.

The property tax bill is itemized and I find it scary that you don't know what/why you're paying a certain bill.

Property taxes includes taxes from the county and other taxing entities. This is based off your property appraised value.

Sometimes school taxes are included in your property tax bill, but typically it is a separate bill coming from the school district. School taxes are also based off your property.

Individual taxes is not property taxes, but based on your income. Also know as federal income tax, social security tax, and medicare tax.

Some useful websites for you to look up.

I get three separate bills. MUD, Pearland City and Ft Bend County. Talk about having to spend 20 minutes trying to figure it out.

I got two property tax bills when living in Houston. One was the city/Harris county bill. The second was for the Katy ISD schools. I had two entities Harris CTY CAD and Waller Cty CAD setting tax appraisal values , Waller only set the value for ISD taxes. Katy ISD is in Harris, Waller and Fort Bend counties and they chose Waller County to handle their property taxes for the entire ISD area.

I got bills from both Harris County and Alief ISD annually and paid taxes to both for many years. (Once I turned 65 and claimed the Over-65 and Homestead exemptions, my Harris County taxes were reduced to -0- and my Alief ISD taxes were frozen at $350.)

You can check the amount of your Harris County property taxes on the HCAD site:

HCAD Record Search

Then go to the Alief ISD site and input your address or the CAD Account number as shown on the Harris County site:

In the city, i only get one bill. Property tax with clear break down of HISD, county and other smaller taxes. I write one check to one person.
If your first bill didn't include MUD and School, then you must pay them

Make sure you call the Alief ISD Tax Dept. and tell them you are new to the area, and just received the bill. Harris County, in particular, is odd in that you pay a separate County bill and ISD bill UNLESS you live in Houston within the HISD borders.............they consolidated their tax offices about 5 (?) years ago.

Some areas have separate City bills, etc. I pay taxes within 5 Texas counties and they are all different.

Generally, the bills are due January 31st, and if you are late, you are charged a penalty. So, make sure you call Alief ISD and find out what is going on.

(I'm re-posting to make sure the OP has accurate information. Get over the MUD stuff.)
