No sign of Florida man swallowed by sinkhole while asleep | Reuters

Based on this story, I would be terrified to live in that area. Puts Houston hot summers and traffic into perspective.

What a scary situation. There are sinkholes all over that place.

Makes one hope builders are doing soil samples.

My husband and I talked about this yesterday and what an awful thing this was! I have heard about sinkholes before and even read in our local paper some time ago about people in Cheshire CT having sinkholes appear in their backyards. It is an awful thing when it happens. I do know in the Cheshire CT area that there are old mines underground that cause this to happen. We are the next town over from them so I hope this never happens to us. Very scary.

Actually, sinkholes are common in the type of soil around Houston. I read that there over 17 insurance claims per day throughout the southern U.S.

A very sad occurrence for the family in Florida. That's a horrific way to die. Acidic ground water eats the soil causing the sinkhole. No warnings...

My Florida raised sil tells me part of the problem is also draining the aquifers dry. Couple that with the very porous rock in Florida and sandy soil. He stopped cave diving years ago.

We have a serious subsidence problem here, too.

Um, not exactly. The Baytown Nature Center used to be a subdivision which was abandoned because of a sink hole.

Not yet,
keep in mind that Texas is full of people that think each person is responsible for doing a geological survey under their house to see whether or not they are on top of one of those holes.

I started thinking about this when I went to Marvel Cave in Branson,
from above all you see is a small hole, but this is what it looks like under that small hole

The structure that you see there, I think is 4 stories high

I hear about a story on the local news about every other year. I think the last one I heard about was in Pearland last year.
